World Water Day, which is held on 22 March, invites us to further our understanding of the interrelations between two basic resources, water and energy, and their potential to act as a driving force of growth. In relation to the role played by companies in this sphere, the Executive Chairman of Agbar, Angel Simón, stressed that “the water-energy binomial is essential for all companies, like us, committed to sustainable development, which involves knowledge, human resources and innovation”.
According to UN data, about 8% of the global energy generation is used for pumping, treating and transporting water for human consumption. Water resources are moreover used to generate geothermal energy, an alternative energy in countries with water scarcity.
The interrelations between water and energy do indeed play an important role in the definition of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and in the conceptualization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), scheduled to replace the current Millennium Development Goals (MDG), which expire in 2015 and which mostly affect access to water and sanitation.
