The United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 as “International Year of Water Cooperation”, by means of resolution 65/154, dated 20 December 2010. A few months earlier, in July, another United Nations resolution had already officially recognized the human right to water and sanitation.
This represents a new opportunity, strengthened through dialogue and cooperation, to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, to which Agbar is fully committed. These goals include halving, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to drinking water and basic sanitation services. Important progress has been made in relation to drinking water, but we are still far from achieving the sanitation target.
Agbar will participate throughout 2013, as it has done historically, in initiatives and actions to promote water cooperation. Agbar will pay particular attention to disseminating the actions that it carries out in this sphere, with special emphasis on World Water Day, which will be held on 22 March.
